The World of Robotics

Today was "geek" heaven - I mean that in a very nice way. The finale to Austin's robotic lego league was an invitation to Blair High School. Blair High School has one of only 3 robotic clubs in the county. First, Blair HS is HUGE! I was afraid to walk in the front door. As I entered the room, you couldn't help but notice all the young men who seemed so much taller than myself with braces, pimply faces, shaggy hair and talked in a language that was way over my head (thats where the geek part comes in). Yet they were polite and loved talking, showing and sharing with the kids (ages 6-10 for the league but the younger ones were there too). Then our group did a presentation and shared their projects which the older kids acted very impressed....and maybe they actually were - I know I was. I got to chat with the students a bit. I learned more about what to expect at certain middle schools and high schools - as most of these students have transferred into Blair because of the Robotic Club. I asked them about their future goals - they were so grounded and focused. I knew that someday, these young men, as "geeky" as they may seem to others at school, would some day be quite successful while the rest are still trying to figure life out. When they are given a robotic project, they have 6 weeks to complete it. They meet every day from 3 - 6 and 9-5 on weekends (wow! that's dedication). Then it's competition time. I tried to envision Austin as one of these young men standing before me - is this what he will look like at that age, will he be talking about things I don't understand like calibrations, pistons, and hydraulic pressure - wait, he already does, will he have the patience and kindess to explain things to his mommy. I soon realized it really isn't too far in the future. It was a great experience!
