On this day of honor, I remember my Uncle Richard. Lance Cpl Richard Wesley Williamson of the Marine Corps died 8/10/66 in Vietnam, just one week shy of his 20th birthday. I was too young to remember my times with him, but in later years, I read the letters he regularly sent my mom from Vietnam and he always remembered to ask about me. I wish there had been an opportunity to know him longer. I don't really know if he believed in the war he was fighting, he never wrote anything negative about Vietnam or its people. He just wanted to serve his country. May all those who have lost their lives serving our country be remembered and honored.
“All that survives after our death are publications and people. So look carefully after the words you write, the thoughts and publications you create, and how you love others. For these are the only things that will remain.” - Susan Niebur
