“All that survives after our death are publications and people. So look carefully after the words you write, the thoughts and publications you create, and how you love others. For these are the only things that will remain.” - Susan Niebur

and then there was SMOKE!
I am usually a paranoid individual. I always recheck windows, locks, etc. each night before I go to sleep. I never leave the house with anything on or running...but this one time. So I thought to myself, let me cook a potato in the microwave. Microwave has a special setting - worked great in the past and usually requires you to run it twice to get a nice soft potato. This time I thought, hey, I'll throw the potato in the microwave and make a quick run to the grocery store for 4 items (okay, so I got 6 but I was only gone 20 minutes). As I arrived home, I opened the front door to a house filled with smoke - heavy dark smoke! I immediately thought I left something on the stove...though I hadn't used it. Nothing. Quickly ran to each room - huge amounts of smoke...but hardly none in the hallway. That didn't make sense - maybe its coming from the vents. MAYBE Brett turned on the furnace to check it and left it on and something happened. I ran downstairs - no smoke at all. I'm in panic mode, run back upstairs to call 911 (yes I know I probably should have called them first). Phone was on kitchen table. Then it hits me...could it be the microwave. I opened it carefully - only to find a charred and destroyed microwave!! Found the culprit. The potato was charcoal. I took it and threw it in the flowerbed. Hours later, I would discover that the charred potato was still on fire as I saw smoke coming up out of my bushes!!. It's day 3 and you are no longer knocked over by the smell of smoke. We've washed all the bedsheets, sprayed the curtains and furniture with Frebreeze, threw out the possessed microwave and put in a new one. I'm still wheezing a bit from the smoke (since I have asthma) but other than that. All is ok. Just this once...I tell you ONCE did I stray and leave the house with something on. NEVER again!! NEVER!
