Attack of the Fierce Yellow Jackets!
Poor Austin, just walking behind the house was attacked by yellow jackets. He came screaming and running to the front of the house - literally flashed by us. He was screaming hysterically about a bee. We couldn't tell if he had actually been stung or being chased....Austin is the hysterical type. With my fear of bees, I immediately sent Brett into the house to see about the problem. We tried to remain calm as it then took us another 1/2 hour or so to figure out that he had been stung 3 times, needed a stinger removed AND still had some live bees on HIM!! It was crazy. Brett and I kind of ignored it at first because Austin acts that hysterical just by the sight of blood from a small scrape. It is really hard to assess injury or do damage control with that level of hysteria going on. Then we feel so horrible afterwards that we didn't address the injury faster or more seriously. Once he was calm, he was able to take some Benedryl and Motrin for the stings. Keeping ice on the injury keeps the venom from spreading and helps with the pain. Poor little man. Spoke with the doctor just to make sure that we weren't missing anything or needed to have more concerns for being stung 3 times. Luckily, we were right on target with our treatment of the stings. Unfortunately, the sting on his foot is probably going to hurt for a while from where the stinger was removed and its right where the sandel strap goes. Oh dear...another dilemma. The bees were living in a small log of wood left over from our winter fireplace supply. Brett used freon to freeze them, then he burned the wood. That closes the chapter on that incident. On the positive side, I've never seen the twins so worried about their big brother (as its usually them that is hurt). They were very caring and concered and it was sweet to see them tending to him for once.
