Knock Knock

Knock knock...who's there....it's the ER...again! I have to say that having 3 boys has been uneventful in many ways, thank goodness. So far, knock on wood, no broken bones or stitches. But what we have had lately are falls during ice skating and trips to the ER! Oh my! First Dylan tripped on his toe pick while racing with a friend (both are very proficient skaters)and flew head first into the ice. I didn't actually witness it (you know, you blink and something happens). He continues to skate. Afterwards he says "mommy I fell and hit my head". Okay. Let mommy take a look. Gigantic hematoma on his head - major panic. Rush to the ER. No signs of a concussion...he should get a black eye (which he didn't). Home again home again jiggity jig. Then 5 weeks later the post-concussion headaches start. After multiple visits to the dr, x-rays (no fractures) and a trip to Childrens Hospital to see a neurologist, it seems Dylan is on the mend. It turns out that his hematoma was from deeper inside his skull (hence no black eye). The bump which is still there has calcified into bone - so it could be a few years before Dylan has a smooth forehead again. It will take years for it to break down. He may continue to have headaches off and on under his bump, we just need to keep track of how often and how bad. But he was ready to be back on the ice and back in action! Though he is quite MAD that I am making him wear a helmet again. Connor on the other hand, who fell this past Sunday - no bumps, just a few scratches, little bit of a headache. Doing good and back in school. Though his trip to the ER lasted all day (oppose to Dylans 1/2 hr). They had even admitted him to the hospital but later decided to release him. He was so sick and in so much pain. But after sleeping it off for 4 hours (yes, they let them sleep now with a concussion, he awoke bright eyed and ready for popsicles. Kids. So that is how our spring season kept us on our toes.
