What a weekend. Sometimes I think I need to check my crazy level. On Saturday, we set out
for Walkersville, MD to ride the Walkersville Southern Railroad. It was, of all things, Jesse James Day. Okay, I'm not a big fan of letting my sons play with guns or being around them (even if they are fake) but this was just way too "boy" to pass up. We didn't have cowboy hats but I quickly made them bandanas for around their necks. Connor was quite proud e
specially when we showed up and the cowboys on the train were wearing them too. We rode in the outdoor car with the Sheriff so the boys got alot of one-on-one time on how to be a real cowboy. The bandit came on board and "stole" all the treasures (someone gave all the kids money and jewels). Then there was a great gun battle between the bandit and the sheriff. The biggest thrill of all, the bandit gave the boys each a used prop bullet from his gun! He could have been Santa with the excitement of that gift! We've done lots of themed train rides but I think this
definitely ranked as a favorite for them. After the train ride and all that excitement, we decided to visit the Fountain Rock Nature Center in Walkersville. We were the only ones there - it's big and nice, my favorite so far - the nature guide was more than happy to show us everything. Everything included her taking out the snakes, taratulas and hissing cockroaches for the kids to touch (UGH!). Now that was an adventure.
As if that wasn't enough excitement for one weekend, we did an early rise and shine on Sunday morning and h
eaded to D.C. to explore the Washington Monument. Our tickets were for 9:30 a.m. so we were there early to explore. The boys all had specific questions that they needed to ask and find answers. The boys were really excited to see so many things from the top. After that, we were attempting to go in one direction, got turned around in another (remember, we're in D.C.) and ended up at Arlington Cemetery (decided to stop in search of clean bathrooms). While there, the boys saw the Tour Mobile and begged to ride it. So for the next 40 minutes, we rode around the Cemetery to view sights and learn history. I had visited
only once while very little when my Aunt and Uncle were given the honor to lay wreaths for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I hope I can visit again when I have more time. All in all, the boys learned alot, remembered alot and made note of where they want to go next! Hey Becky! Wow, you sure have had a busy few weeks!! Phew... how do you do it all?! Looks like the boys are enjoying their summer. Hope all is well. I liked your post about "things to ponder" It is so true. If we all just took a moment to reflect and reach out to someone else in need, we could do it. We often get so caught up in our daily lives, that we forget to call that someone to say hello, send a card, etc. We just need to take the time to stop once in a while. I should be working right now, but I am taking a few minutes to catch up on blogs!
