To the Mountaintop

Last night I attended a special service at our church to honor Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. The gospel music was amazing - I get all teary. The speaker, Bishop Stith, has returned on a number of a occassions to our church for this same celebration. I look forward all year to hear him speak on this one day. It was amazing to hear the testaments of those church members who had the honor of being in Rev. King's presence long ago. Rev. King would have been 80 on this birthday. He had a dream for all us, one of peace, friendship and equality. I think he would be amazed and proud at how far we have all come. Regardless of a new administration coming into the White House, our country has many difficult days ahead. Rev. King also saw many struggles ahead but he strongly felt his faith would see him through. I've read alot of his speeches, but I like this paragraph best for what lies before us....

Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. - Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today we will join others at the local community center for an event sponsored by Austin's school, the kids will be making sandwiches for a local shelter and other activities. Thank you Rev. King for your words, wisdom, guidance and leadership.
